The ground where our forebears walked is where we understand the humanity of our history.
On the To Us You Matter Civic Engagement Tour, we visited Port Chicago Naval Magazine to honor the 320 Navy Sailors, 2/3 of which were African American. They were killed in an explosion after they had been lied to about the state of the ammunition, and the 50 who refused to return to work until the Navy set safe working conditions for loading ships.
We are grateful to have Ranger Eric, Ranger Tory, and Chief Interpreter Kelli take us to experience this important part of history. We walked the ground the sailors worked, heard the voice of the sailors who experienced the tragedy, felt the wind of the ocean, and climbed into the boxcars where the ammunition was loaded.
