Every winter break, staff and students of the Institute for Community Leadership dedicate a week to studying, writing and preparing for public speeches and activism rooted in the legacy of Dr. King. This year, due to COVID, this residential program is taking place on our campus at the Jack O’Dell Education Center, with masks, social distancing and full days of in-person and virtual classes.
Themes to study as we head into 2022 from Dr. King’s Chaos or Community: Where Do We Go From Here, the chapter entitled The World House:
  • The great new problem of mankind is we have inherited a large house, a great “world house” in which we must learn to live together in peace, or perish as fools.
  • We are all interconnected. What affects one directly, affects all indirectly.
  • Racism is a tenacious evil, but it is not immutable.
  • We must move with urgency to create the promised land of racial justice and economic equity.
  • When scientific power outruns moral power, we end up with guided missiles and misguided men. Our hope for creative living in this world house that we have inherited lies in our ability to reestablish the moral ends of our lives in personal character and social justice.
  • We must generate a revolution of values in order to bridge the gulf between superfluous wealth and abject poverty.
  • Nothing could be more tragic than to live in these revolutionary times and fail to achieve the new attitudes and the new mental outlooks that the new situation demands.
We thank you for your support. We have important work ahead in 2022, and look forward to working with you to create change. We hope you will take a short break to view our video above, with a message for self-transformation and action.
Thank you.
