Staff and students joined the Faith and Politics Institute with Executive Director Joan Mooney for an online leadership conversation with Karen Korematsu

Dear friends: Today we joined the Faith and Politics Institute with Executive Director Joan Mooney for our leadership seminar for a conversation with Karen Korematsu and the story of the struggles and victories and her father, Fred Korematsu. The dialogue, and our student’s questions are a true Call to Action for these times we are living! We hope you check out this important conversation.

Fred Korematsu Virtual Pilgrimage Story with Karen Korematsu

At age 23, Fred Korematsu legally challenged the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II all the way to the US Supreme Court. Our guest was his daughter, Karen Korematsu, the Founder and Executive Director of the Fred T. Korematsu Institute, and a powerful advocate for racial equity, social justice, and human rights for all www.korematsuinstitute.org/homepage/.Karen shared insights on her father’s unlikely activism as well as her passion for shining a light on this dark era in American history to ensure it does not happen again. She joined us on our 2017 California Asian American Experience Pilgrimage and our 2019 Congressional Civil Rights Pilgrimage to Alabama. Our President Joan Mooney was joined in moderating the webcast by 15-year old Anka Bolorsukh of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Freedom Center in Oakland, CA. Thank you, Karen and Anka for shining a light on dark spots in our civil rights history that made the news even today in relation to the pandemic. Keep the faith.
