One of our purposes for the To Us You Matter Civic Engagement Tour is to have our students practice turning on a dime. That means being able to flip a switch within ourselves, changing our attitude and conduct at a moment’s notice. This is one way we can transform ourselves so that we can be present and responsive to ever-changing needs and circumstances in the process of creative nonviolent social change. Having control over our discomfort and smiling through the pain, and not allowing ourselves to be distracted by things that may be pleasurable.
“Developing the capacity to flip a switch and immediately be on. Speaking, reading, studying and having conduct that forces us to speak. That is what the work and the fight against poverty, racism and violence need from us right now.” Jayda (Student)
