“Through your education and your commitment to community service you are going to learn things that you never knew before. You have to be open to being excited by new things and about being driven by new things.” –Senator Jeannie Darneille
The importance of curiosity, self-awareness and self-transformation were central themes of our online leadership seminar with Washington State Senator Jeannie Darneille. She joined our youth and staff to dialog about takeaways from a long and distinguished career in public service.
Senator Darneille says her faith and experience have motivated her work to improve the lives of the poor. Her career has included a decade working in colleges and universities across four states and over 30 years working in non-profit social service agencies. She credits each leadership position with increasing her awareness of issues such as health care, poverty, homelessness, homophobia, mental health and other concerns that affect everyone.
ICL continues to turn on a dime, increasing our online classes and sessions during the stay-at-home order. We are bringing experts from around the world with feet-on-the-ground experience in organizing, civic engagement and public service together with our youth and staff.
This is an excellent time to study the relevance and importance of transforming ourselves to make change in the world.
